Turkey's Silent E -- Freebie

Today I am thankful that my sister lives less than twenty miles away. When we need each other, we can get there in no time at all!

Today's freebie is a game to reinforce reading long and short vowel words. Students try to read four words in a row on the grid to win the game. They can use their markers to block another player.

S'More Long Vowel Practice Freebie

One of my favorite parts about the rehearsal dinner party I gave for my sweet niece, Megan, and her just as sweet now-husband Casey, was the S'More bar. Ummm...Ummm...Good!

I'm sharing the goodness with you with this freebie on spelling long a and long e words.
Most of the words are multisyllable words, so that's good practice for your kiddos!
Dont forget to enter my giveaway. I'm giving two lucky winners a copy of everything in my TpT Store and lots of my other online friends have contributed some unbelievable products, too.

Long and Short Vowel Sort - Freebie - Winner Announced!

My team is giving a common assessment on the Common Core Standard  of distinguishing between long and short vowel sounds in one syllable words this Friday. (We were a little ambitious since this is just our first week of school!) This long and short vowel sorting activity should give my kids some extra practice. Students read the words on the cards and sort them according to the vowel sound. This can be done in either a literacy station, in small groups, or even handed out and used as a whole group activity.

Just click on the pic above to get the sorting activity!

And the winner of my Blogaversary Giveaway is.....
I'll get with you a little later today to work out the details of getting you all your fabulous prizes!

Long and Short Sort -- Double Freebie

Second graders must be able to distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words in the new Common Core standards.

Use this freebie in two ways!

(1)  Students sort the words according to the long and short vowel sounds.

(2) After they have practiced reading the words, give them a timer and let them time themselves reading the words. Have them record their time and try to beat it on the next go-round!

Red Rover, Red Rover, Let the Vowels Come Over

We were reviewing long and short vowel sounds this week and my kids just weren't getting it, so I decided to give them cards with our spelling words and have them sort themselves into groups of either long vowels or short vowels on opposite sides of the room. Even after they grouped, they still were not putting the words in the correct category. On the spur of the moment, I told the short vowel side of the room to call one of the players from the other side that didn't belong over to their side, just like when they played Red Rover at recess. They loved it! We also played it to review common and proper nouns. Click on the pic below to download the directions and the words we used. (They are from Scott Foresman's Unit 2 "Penguin Chick.")
.....and don't forget to leave a comment if you download!
