It's a Noun Hunt! -- Freebie

Need a "filler" that meets a CC Standard to keep your kiddos occupied while you try to finish up a report?
Try this Noun Scavenger Hunt. Put out a stack of Christmas books, library books, or even textbooks.  Students search through the books to find proper, common, singular, plural, abstract, singular possessive, plural possessive, and collective nouns.

Just click on the pic above to get your gift….and please leave a "gift of a comment!" I'd love to hear from you.

Collective Nouns Tic Tac Toe - Freebie

Run one copy of this game off to use in a center for a review on collective nouns, or make one copy for each pair of students to use as large group review. Either way, your kids will love reviewing collective nouns by playing Tic Tac Toe!

And the best part?
If you aren't studying collective nouns right now, run off the game board and heart markers and use to review anything at all!

Show me some love by leaving a comment below!

If you need more activities for reviewing collective nouns, visit my Teachers Pay Teachers Store or Teachers Notebook Shop to purchase my new packet of literacy stations I just uploaded!

We Are Thinking About........

We talk a lot about thinking in my classroom.

I love, love, love Tanny McGregor's Comprehension Connections and all her right-on-target ideas for teaching reading. If you haven't read the book, go buy, borrow, or steal a copy NOW! I truly believe it should be required reading for all literacy teachers.

My kids loved her lesson on metacognition using a salad bowl. They are proud they know a "college" word that many adults can't define. Because they know I really, really, really want them to think about their thinking, I can hear them saying  "metacognition" when they are talking to their partners in small groups.

To focus our thinking about different topics and skills, we have started posting our work on our classroom door. Look closely and you can see the kiddos' "thinking faces!"

I love that she has her tongue stuck out to the side like she is concentrating so hard!

These thinking samples were based on collective nouns.....a HARD concept for my second graders to get.

Have any of you done lessons based on McGregor's book? I'd love to hear your success stories.

Be sure to check back tomorrow. Several of my blogging friends are helping me celebrate reaching one thousand followers! You might win some great surprises!

And as an early surprise......
I'd like to thank Sarah Picone Hall for being my one hundredth Networked Blog follower!

Sarah, if you will contact me with your email address, I'd like to send you a $10.00 Amazon gift card!

As our kiddos say in our Morning Meeting.....

Fishing for Collective Nouns -- Freebie

The Language Common Core standards require second graders to use collective nouns. Yes. You heard me correctly. Collective nouns.

So.....here's a game to help students identify collective nouns in sentences so that they can start using them!
After your students have played the game and are familiar with the words, use the collective noun cards I included for writing sentences.

Just click on the pic above to download the two activities in one file.

Don't forget that I've teamed up with Learning Resources to give you a chance to win their HearAll recorder. Go HERE to enter! Drawing ends Monday morning at midnight.
