Lucky Sentences for St. Patrick's Day -- Freebie

Can you believe it's almost St. Patrick's Day? Until the past few years, elementary teachers and kids were the only people I noticed celebrating. Lately, though, you see St. Patrick's Day celebrations everywhere.

To help you celebrate, here's a quick activity to put together for a literacy station. Give your students a card with a simple sentence and have them expand it into either a compound or complex sentence.

Just click on the link above for your freebie.

If you'd like a chance to get a free copy of my St. Patrick's Day Lucky Sentences pack I just posted in my TpT store, leave a tip for my readers on how you teach expanding sentences in the comment field below. I'll pick the two most original ideas and send you the entire packet. Please leave your comments by midnight on Tuesday, March 10. Be sure you include an email address so I can send you the pack.

Expanding the Kingdom - Sentence Freebie

I'm trying everything I can think of to give my kiddos good models for practicing sentence writing. I'm hoping this arranging activity will fit the bill.
The cards can all be arranged to create compound sentences, so they kiddos are going to have to really think about this!
Just click on the pic above to get the file.
This is part of a new packet I've posted on both my Teachers Pay Teachers and Teachers Notebook stores. Click on the store links at the right if you want info on the entire packet.

I would be royally pleased if you could leave a compound sentence as a comment, and I hope you will follow my Teachers Pay Teachers and TeacherNotebook Stores! :)

Trick or Treat Sentences - Freebie

We've been working hard on expanding our sentences so that they paint a picture with words. Now it's time to start putting them together in a short paragraph.
Give students a picture of a child dressed in a Halloween costume. They write a descriptive sentence and illustrate it. Once they are happy with their sentence, tell them to add three or more sentences that give more details about the picture.
My kids liked reading their sentences to a student and seeing if they could guess which of the cards matched the description.
Next, we are going to see if their friends can draw their own interpretation of the sentence that is similar to the original drawing.

Illustrating Expanded Sentences - Freebie

We are still expanding sentences.

We will be expanding sentences for awhile.

Probably all year.

But we are getting better!

And they like doing it!

After I gave them the sentence stems I posted earlier (click HERE to go to that post), I realized that drawing a picture of the sentence helped the kiddos see how using descriptive words  improved their writing.
So I decided to try getting them to illustrate the sentences each step along the process. Looking at a picture seems to help them realize they need to add more details to their writing.
Here are some of the results.

Have a great weekend!

Expanding Sentences -- Freebie

We have been working on expanding sentences for the past several weeks. I gave my kiddos simple sentences and asked them to expand them by adding adjectives to the subject. Next, they wrote new sentences adding words that told about the verb. Their last sentence told either where or when about the verb. Once they had written the sentences, I asked them to illustrate their work.

Here's a few samples of their work.

Click on the pic below if you want a copy of the simple sentences I used to start the activity.

I'm giving away a freebie each day of October to celebrate Halloween. Check back tomorrow to add your link to the fun!

Expanding Sentences - Freebie

My students are still working on creating simple sentences and aren't ready yet to add words to expand them. I think I'm going to use these cards to bridge the way to sentences with more descriptive words.
