SRSD TREE Freebie

Here is the TREE material for Opinion and Argument writing.  I think you can slide these materials right in to the themes I've posted over the past several days. If I added a graphic to match each theme, I thought it looked too busy. This packet includes small copies for attaching to a student's desk or in a writing journal.

I will work on the material for narrative writing next.

I hope this works for you. Please keep checking back for the narrative info. I have meetings every day this week, so It might be a little while before I get it posted.

Sweet Order Scoot! -- Freebie!

I love Scoot games.
I love Valentines Day.
I think the Order of Operations is pretty neat.
Put all three of those things together and you've got a pretty neat activity for a Math station.

I think part of the Common Core Math Standard for Third Grade O.A.3.8 is often overlooked.
Students are required to solve two step word problems using the four operations and represent those problems using different strategies.
The very last sentence of that standard says ….should know how to perform operations in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular Order of Operations.

Show Some Multiplication Love! -- Freebie

It's been a peaceful, restful Saturday.
My kids are home from school…I had lunch with my Daddy and sister…and friends came over for supper and…wait for it…BROUGHT SUPPER! I didn't even have to put on big girl clothes and get out of the house to eat.

I'm trying to do a little planning and get ahead of the game. I hope the long weekend ends the way it started and I just might get a few extra things done.

Here's a freebie in case you are planning for things to do a little on down the road.

My kiddos have always loved the card games I make, regardless of what skill they are spotlighting.
This one is a fun multiplication game you can use in a math station. I've also made multiple copies so that I have enough copies for every two students to play. It's good for those times when you have a few minutes for a quick review.
Set a timer for five minutes and watch them go.

Just click on the pic below to get the file. It's a freebie at my TpT store.

If you love the game, show some love with a comment.

Two of My Favorite Christmas Books -- Freebie

These two books are just too good not to share again.

How Santa Got His Job and How Santa Lost His Job are two of my favorite Christmas books. I'm sharing the freebies I posted last year with you again in case you missed them the first time around or just need to be reminded about these two fun, fun, fun books.
I always start by using the covers of the book as a writing prompt. Ask your kiddos how they think Santa got his job and have them write a short story with all the story elements.
Once you read the story, they can compare and contrast their version with the original. Do the same activity for their predictions on how Santa lost his job.

Click on the pic above to get your gift for today……and please think about leaving me a comment. I love to hear from you.

Latin Suffixes Freebie!

One of the hottest topics during our Common Core training has been on Latin suffixes. Third grade students should be able to decode words with common Latin suffixes (RF.3.3b).

This fun activity requires students to match up words that end in the suffixes -er and -or with a meaning, rewrite the meaning in their own words, and then choose five of the words to use in sentences of at least seven words.
To get your copy, just click on the pic of that cute little gopher!

Just print the file, add dice, and you are ready to go.

It's a Bump-a-palooza!

I love. love. love. Bump games!

If you haven't ever used them in your class, I've got a freebie for you to get you started.
Either laminate the gameboard or put it in a plastic page protector. Give one board to each pair of students, along with ten markers for each child and three dice. Students roll the three dice, add the numbers together, and use one of their markers to cover up the sum. The fun comes when they bump their friends off the board! Further instructions are included in the packet.

Click on the pic above to get the game.

This is just one of ten Bump games from my latest product I've uploaded to my stores on Teachers Pay Teachers and Teachers Notebook. Just click on the links to the right to get the whole packet.

Save the Pronouns! - Freebie

Second graders have to be able to use reflexive pronouns as part of the Common Core ELA Standards. Mine aren't quite ready yet, so we are going to review pronouns for a couple of days.
I'm using this game in a literacy station to review.
Click on the pic above if you need a quick pronoun review.

Poetry Activities

My kids are really getting into reading poetry.....lots more than I thought they would.

Each kiddo got their own copy of the poem to add to their poetry journal. We drew boxes around each stanza, highlighted rhyming words, underlined examples of repetition, and marked examples of alliteration.
I think their favorite part is determining the rhythm of the poem.

We started by clapping to a simple song they had done in Music class. I kept clapping while I was talking, so that they could see that regular talking doesn't have a rhythm. We kept clapping while I read the poem, then they read it with me.

We moved into marking the lines of poetry.
We used dots for unstressed syllables and lines for the emphasized syllables.
They've been clapping and trying to make regular beats out of ordinary conversation!
We also added a foldable of poetry elements to our Reading Journals.

We're concentrating on poetry for a few more weeks. I think I'm going to have to step up my original plans. My kiddos are really getting into this!

Leave a comment with your favorite ideas and activities for poetry.
