Multiplication Wizard -- Freebie!

Happy Labor Day!

It's the last day of our Fall Break. If you've followed my blog for awhile, you know that our district is out for a week while our town celebrates the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration and names the World Grand Champion on the Saturday before Labor Day.

I've had a great break...spent a little time at the beach reading, eating, and sunning...cleaned out some closets at home...spent some time with friends.

I'm trying to get back in the school-frame-of-mind, so I thought I'd make a multiplication game. This one is all based on multiplying by multiples of ten.

Click on the pic above to get your game...and please think about leaving a comment. Do you use stations in your math class? Are games a part of those stations?

(BTW...my TpT Store is all marked 20% off today!)

Free Reading Task Cards

Really? It's only Tuesday? Are you sure?
I've presented three sessions for our district's Core Conference over the past two days.

I wore heels.
I don't know why.
I love sharing ideas with teachers.
I don't like doing it in heels.

Enough whining.

One of our sessions was on using formative assessments to differentiate the activities in your literacy stations.
Here is a set of reading task cards I thought you might like that I shared with the teachers.

Each is leveled according to whether the student is Approaching (At-Risk), On-Level, or Beyond.

SRSD TREE Freebie

Here is the TREE material for Opinion and Argument writing.  I think you can slide these materials right in to the themes I've posted over the past several days. If I added a graphic to match each theme, I thought it looked too busy. This packet includes small copies for attaching to a student's desk or in a writing journal.

I will work on the material for narrative writing next.

I hope this works for you. Please keep checking back for the narrative info. I have meetings every day this week, so It might be a little while before I get it posted.

SRSD????? --Freebies!

Our State Department is training teachers to use SRSD as we teach writing.
I've been asking for a reliable way to teach writing for YEARS! Here it is FINALLY!
(At least I hope so.....the proof is in the pudding. We'll see what happens when we use it at school this year.)
SRSD stands for Self-Regulated Strategy Development. Students are given strategies, mnemonics to help them remember, and lots of modeling and practice to help them internalize the strategies. For more info, click {HERE} to visit the thinkSRSD website.

I've made three packets to help our teachers as we incorporate them into our instruction this year. If you would like any of the information, just click on the pictures below. Each packet contains 25 pages of materials to help you as you implement  SRSD. There are different versions of the materials to help you differentiate for your students. Everything is free! I designed the files to be used in a writing notebook. Make sure you visit their website so you'll know how to implement the materials.  As I learn more, I'll be updating the files and adding more goodies. Keep checking my blog to stay up to date.

If you have a certain theme you'd like to use, leave me a comment and I'll try to make one for you if I already have the clip art. I think this is THAT good and want EVERYONE to know about it!

(Click on the pic below to follow my SRSD Pinterest Board. It's my latest obsession for pinning!)

If you want more info, check out the following book.

I Mustache You All About Closed Syllables -- Freebie

One of the main goals for our third graders is to decode multi-syllable words. We devoted a lot of time this past year to helping them learn the six syllable types so that they can break multi-syllble words apart into decodable units. Teaching the six syllable types was a big part of this. If the kiddos can recognize the six syllable types and use that knowledge to decode words, that's half the battle!

This freebie gives practice mapping closed one syllable words. It can be used in all grades, even kindergarten! The higher grades can use it for remediation.

Click on the pic below to get your copy.

If you haven't been following A Class*y Collaboration this summer, click {HERE} to catch up! We've added some brand new authors with lots of new ideas for you.

Fortune Teller Word Game - Freebie!

Here's a fun word game for any grade level.

Use the blank sheet of cards to write any vocabulary or spelling words your kiddos need for practice. Students pair up. One partner gives clues to the other to help his partner guess the word. Teams score one point for every guess. The object is to have the lowest score at the end of the game.
Keep the word cards turned face up during the game if your kiddos need a little help.

Click on one of the pics above to download your freebie.

The game is in my Teachers Pay Teachers Store with a card for the 1,000 Fry words. Click on the links at the right if you are interested.

Books to Teach Relationship between Illustrations and Text

Common Core requires students at all levels to be able to pull information from illustrations that accompany the text to add meaning to what is being read.

Kindergarten: RL K.7  With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).

First Grade:  RL 1.7  Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

Second GradeL RL 2.7 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

Third Grade:  RL 3.7  Explain how specific aspects of a text’s illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting).

The first two books will help you plan lessons to meet this standard and are probably already on your bookshelf.

All of Chris Van Allsburg's books have wonderful illustrations. Jumanji is just one. Remind students to look for the little white bull terrier that appears  in most of his books and write reasons why the dog belongs in the particular story.

Jumanji

Who doesn't love the zany antics of Gloria?
Cover up the words with Post-its and let students guess which safety rule is illustrated.

Officer Buckle and Gloria

You might not have a copy of Van Allsburg's The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, but if you don't, go order one now.  I have one of the portfolio sets so that I can post one of the pictures and the caption in the room or in a literacy station. My students love when I put one of these up. They will scour the picture for details.

Here's a link to the portfolio edition.

And last, but not least, is a collection of short stories written by familiar authors telling what they think happened in the Harris Burdick pictures. This one is on my wish list, but I think it will be fun to share these stories with my kiddos after they write their own.

Do you have any other books that are your favorites for linking illustrations with the text? Share them in a comment. I'll choose one of the comments to win a product of your choice from my TpT store. Leave your comment and email address before 11:59 p.m. on Monday, June 2.
