School Destroyed

I'm watching the news as I type and can't help but think about the elementary school that was destroyed in a neighboring county. I think most teachers think of their classrooms and schools as their "other" home. Imagine losing all your materials, supplies, and books when your school was destroyed in a tornado.

South Lincoln School in Lincoln County, Tennessee, was destroyed yesterday. One of my closest friends at my school lives in Lincoln County and knows several families who lost their homes.

Here's a picture of the school from their webpage.

Here's one after the tornado.

The school family is definitely in my prayers.

Kung Fu Hunt!

When I was a little girl and my friends would come to our farm to play, we would stage elaborate treasure hunts all over the fields and around the pond.
Maybe that's why I like to use hunting activities in my classroom. I firmly believe that a teacher controls the climate of the classroom……if I think it's fun, the kiddos generally do, too.

On that note……
Here is a hunting activity for you to use to give your kiddos practice in dropping the final y in words before adding a suffix.

St. Pat's -ly Hunt -- Freebie

When I was a Common Core Coach for our state this summer, almost every group of teachers I worked with wanted to discuss Reading Foundations Skill 3.3.a: Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes.

A derivational suffix changes the meaning of the word and usually changes the part of speech of the word. For instance, happy is an adjective. If you add the suffix -ly to happy, it becomes happily,  an adverb.

Today's freebie gives your kiddos a chance to get up out of their seat and find the adjectives on cards you have hidden around the room. They record the adjectives and add -ly to make the word an adverb. Once they have the new word, they must write a sentence containing the word.

St. Patrick's Multiple Meaning Words -- Freebie

Today's freebie gives your kiddos practice working with words that can be both a noun and a verb. Students draw one of the cards and write two sentences using the word. One sentence must use the word as a noun and the other as a verb.
For instance, if they draw the word root, they must be sure to use the word correctly as a noun and as a verb.

The healthy plant's root soaked up the nourishing water.
I will root for my favorite team at the championship game tomorrow.

Please leave a comment. I'd love to know if your kids were successful with the activity.

Here are some freebies to get you in the mood for St. Patrick's Day.

Take Five Lucky Nouns was one of my kiddos favorite activities to play last year. Just add a timer and you are ready to go!

Here's a fun writing activity to practice writing directions. Ask your students how they would catch a leprechaun. Remind them of signal words for sequencing and turn them loose!

Check back tomorrow for a brand new St. Patrick's Day freebie.
