Turkey's Possessives -- Freebie

Today, I am thankful that I teach in a school system that tries to make decisions that put the best interests of the students first. That's not always the case in some places.

Your freebie for today is a quick, fun activity to review possessive nouns. Students draw a card, determine if the noun is a plural possessive or singular possessive noun, and record it on a graphic organizer. You can have them make the graphic organizer or use the one I included.
After writing the nouns, they highlight the apostrophe with a marker. Everything to the left of the apostrophe is highlighted in a different color. This helps them actually see the noun before the apostrophe is added.
After sorting the possessive nouns, students choose four nouns and use them in sentences.

Possessive Nouns Scoot!

We are working hard to master using apostrophes to make possessives. I think we will be working for quite awhile!
Today, I put a picture of each kiddo on their desk with some tablet paper. We took turns moving around the desks and writing a sentence with a possessive noun about the person in the picture.

Their last stop was a picture of me. I tried to hold as much as my arms could carry so that they would all have something funny to write about (including a cactus), but most of them wrote about my boots. Go figure.
(It's hard to see the little fellow because of the glare, but he's holding the chair up over his head!)

Thanks to all of you who entered my big giveaway. I'll be posting the winners tomorrow morning, so stay tuned.

Hoot Owl Possessives - Freebie

One of the easiest ways I've learned to get students to distinguish between singular and plural possessive nouns is to have them highlight the apostrophe in the word. Next, use a different color highlighter to highlight everything to the left of the apostrophe. That helps them see the base word before the apostrophe is added.
Here is a quick activity to use with the highlighters.
