St. Pat's -ly Hunt -- Freebie

When I was a Common Core Coach for our state this summer, almost every group of teachers I worked with wanted to discuss Reading Foundations Skill 3.3.a: Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes.

A derivational suffix changes the meaning of the word and usually changes the part of speech of the word. For instance, happy is an adjective. If you add the suffix -ly to happy, it becomes happily,  an adverb.

Today's freebie gives your kiddos a chance to get up out of their seat and find the adjectives on cards you have hidden around the room. They record the adjectives and add -ly to make the word an adverb. Once they have the new word, they must write a sentence containing the word.

Snow Freebie -- AND First Five Win!

I love all things Cynthia Rylant!
The view outside my window today reminded me of her book Snow. If you don't have a copy, click on the link below to go to Amazon and buy one. You will not be disappointed.

Rylant definitely has a way with words, so why not use them in our classroom? Today's freebie uses Rylant's Snow to help our kiddos distinguish nouns from adjectives. I posted this activity previously, but I've updated it to include the Common Core ELA Standards for second and third grade. Just click on the pic below to get your freebie.

Since I've had such a fabulous bonus snow day, I'm giving away a product of choice from my TpT store to the first five readers who follow my TpT store and leave a comment below with their email address, the name they use to follow my TpT store, and the name of the product they want.
If you won a product over the past two days, please give someone else a chance to win.
All items in my store are on sale for twenty percent off until midnight tonight, so go visit now.

Have a fabulous day!

Adjective and Adverb Scavenger Hunt - Freebie

My kids love it when I put up a scavenger hunt. I honestly don't think they know they are practicing skills! All they know is they are having fun.

My latest hunt is based on adverbs and adjectives.
After finding the 32 words hidden around the room, the students record the words on a T chart they have made themselves.

Just be careful---my assistant and I spent a good ten minutes trying to find one of the cards I had hidden too well!

Just click on the pic above to get the cards.
Happy hunting!

(Please hide me a comment, too! I love hearing from you all.)

Adverbs and Adjectives Game -- Freebie

Here's  a game to play as part of your whole group instruction to review adjectives and adverbs.

Divide your class into teams. Set a timer for ten minutes. Teams take turns drawing cards. They must tell if the word is an adjective or adverb and use it correctly in a sentence. They get to keep the card if they complete each task correctly. The team with the most cards at the end of ten minutes wins.

Put the cards in a literacy station for extra practice.

Spaced Out Adjectives and Adverbs -- Freebie

My students have a hard time distinguishing between adjectives and adverbs, so I made this game for some fun practice. Common Core standards require both second and third grade to work with adjectives and adverbs.

Students divide into two teams -- aliens vs. spacemen. They keep the cards of any questions they answer correctly. If they draw a planet card, they lose all their cards.

Click on the pic above to download the cards.

Don't forget that I get "spaced out" over your comments, so please leave one!

Adjectives and Adverbs -- Freebie

Use this activity in small groups or with partners to classify words as adjectives or adverbs. Once they have separated the two, ask students to work together to improve the basic sentence "The girl ran" by adding adjectives and adverbs.

Please leave a comment if you download! They keep me motivated.

Is There Anything Better Than a Snow Day? Linky Party and Freebie

Is there? Not in my book! Not sleeping much through the night so you can be sure to hear the announcement on TV that your system is OUT! Spending the day in your PJ's! Cuddling up to the computer or with a good book and a hot cup of tea!
But in order to have a precious Snow Day, we have to have SNOW! Maybe if enough of us get snow on the brain, the weatherman will get the message and put one in the forecast. Link up with your favorite snow-themed activity you have to share, your favorite snow-themed book to read with your class,  the best snow-inspired pin you found on Pinterest......anything snow related!
To start us off, here is a freebie based on Cynthia Rylant's precious book, Snow. Students distinguish between nouns and adjectives, then write sentences with two of the pairs.
