Meet Odd Mod and Even Esian

I read Even Steven and Odd Todd to my kids today to review even and odd numbers.

As I read the story, they recorded any numbers they heard on a graphic organizer labeled Even and Odd. (I forgot to make a pic of the graphic organizer.) You could do one organizer on the board to record the whole group's answers or let each child make their own foldable.

After talking about the book and how we recorded the numbers, I divided the class into four groups. Two groups drew Even Steven or Odd Todd. The other two groups gave their characters new names....Odd Mod and Even Esian. (Obviously the kiddos came up with the new names!)

The kiddos could dress the characters in any way they wanted as long as the odd characters only wore an odd number of each item and the even characters only wore an even number.
After the characters were dressed, each group had to write sentences describing the characters.

Here are the finished products!

Meet Odd Todd and Even Steven...
...and Odd Modd and Even Esian!

Assessments, Daily Grades, and Practice for Even/Odd and Arrays - Freebie! - PLUS a Great iPad Tip!

I thought I'd share an assessment, daily work, and practice for our work on
even and odd numbers
(OA.2.3 Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends)
and
arrays
(OA.2.4 Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends).

Just click on each of the above pics to get the two files.

If you use iPads in your classroom, you MUST visit Heidi Songs and read her post on setting up the iPads so that your students can ONLY access the app you want them to work on! Who knew????? I found this great idea while I was trying to catch up on my blog reading, stalking, whatever!

Perfectly Perfect Practice for Even and Odd Numbers - Freebie

Here's another activity for math stations for a little more practice in determining if numbers are even or odd.

My kiddos are pretty good at looking at a number and telling me if it is odd or even, but  writing an explanation is hard for them. I think I'm going to write a number on the board every day right after Calendar Math and get them to draw the number, write an expression, and give an explanation for whether the number is even or odd.

Please practice leaving me some perfectly precious  comments if you download the file!

One More Even and Odd Activity - Freebie

This is the last even odd activity I'll be posting for awhile. Hopefully, all this practice will make my kiddos experts at determining if a number is even or odd!

Provide markers or counters for students to build numbers. After determining if the number is even or odd, they will write an addition number expression to represent their model.

Just click on the pic above to download the activity.

Please leave me a comment and let me know what activities you have done with your kiddos to help them distinguish between even and odd numbers.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone!
I hope you all have a wonderful time celebrating tonight.
I'm joining the Linky Party over at Bunting, Books, and Bainbridge to share some of the best and brightest highlights of 2012.

According to my blog stats, my most popular post was my Cause and Effect Treasure freebie.

I don't really have a favorite product to share, because everything I post is a freebie, so I'll share one of my favorites. (It's actually second on my stats list, too.)

I had fun creating my "Be an Informational Text Super Hero" packet. Judging from the comments you left, it was one of your favs, too.

My most popular Math post was Measure This.

I get lots of fantastic, fun, and functional ideas from the "brightest" blogs I follow on a regular basis.

I love, love, love Classroom Freebies, because everything is free, free, free! One click leads you to lots and lots and lots of great ideas!

I love all the cute ideas from Rockin' Teacher Materials. Go visit!

The absolute BEST part of 2012 has been all the sweet comments from my readers and the help and contributions from my blogging friends.

And now.......
Here's my New Year's Eve present to you...

It's another basic Even/Odd activity for the Second Grade Common Core Standard

Even and Odd Fun -- Freebie

I took an unplanned break from blogging--

Thoughts of Sandy Hook took all my energy and desire for creating for awhile. I've decided the best way to face that tragedy is to do something nice  once a day in honor and memory of the victims and survivors of Sandy Hook. I started with contacting a former teacher and letting him know how much I appreciated all he did for me in high school and in recent years. Think back on the teachers that meant the most to you. Let them know what a big part of your life they have been and still are!

The flu crept up on me (thank heavens I had a flu shot so it wasn't as bad as it could have been), and I even missed my party with my kids at school.

Then Christmas came and went! Both kids are home from college, so nothing is normal!

I finally got back in the swing of things tonight. We tackle even and odd numbers when we go back to school on January 7, so I've created several activities to use in my math stations. I'll post all of them over the next several days. They are similar because I want my kiddos to practice on constructing even and odd numbers for several days.

Just click on the pic above to get the first activity.

Enjoy the rest of your break!

Even and Odd -- Freebie

Second graders must determine whether a group of objects has an odd or even number to help them gain foundations for multiplication. This activity is a good beginning review on even and odd.
