Fishing for Collective Nouns -- Freebie

The Language Common Core standards require second graders to use collective nouns. Yes. You heard me correctly. Collective nouns.

So.....here's a game to help students identify collective nouns in sentences so that they can start using them!
After your students have played the game and are familiar with the words, use the collective noun cards I included for writing sentences.

Just click on the pic above to download the two activities in one file.

HearALL Giveaway!

THIS CONTEST HAS CLOSED!
Learning Resources sent me a HearALL Assessment Recorder to try out in my room. I can sum this handy little device up in three words.

I.  LOVE.  IT.
(Click on the pic above to go to the Learning Resources webpage.)

I turned it on while my kids were reviewing in small groups for our big TCAP test. They were playing games and one group was getting a little off track. I put the recorder beside the table, hit the button, and let it run for a few minutes after I walked away. I came back in a few minutes, turned it off, and played back the group's conversation.

Let's just say it wasn't on topic.

Silence. Furtive looks around the table.

We talked about the goals of the game they were playing and appropriate comments. Then I started the HearALL back up and walked away.

When we replayed the recording a little later, everyone was on topic! Imagine that.

We have also used it to record our fresh reads for fluency practice. The kids are getting a little bored with fresh reads by this time of year, so using the HearALL and playing the recordings back made it all new again.

The possibilities for this are endless....playing samples for parents at conferences, recording the directions to learning stations, listening center activities...
It's so easy to use that the kids can handle it themselves.

The best part of all this? Learning Resources offered one of these for me to use as a giveaway for my followers! And since I just reached 500 followers, the timing is perfect! We can all celebrate!

So if you want a chance to win this amazing little device, you have several ways to do so. If you are a follower of my blog already, leave me a comment below by midnight, Monday, April 30. If you aren't a follower yet, please consider joining my readers now. You'll want to keep in touch, because Learning Resources has given me a Luna document camera to give away, too! Aren't they wonderful?

Long and Short Sort -- Double Freebie

Second graders must be able to distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words in the new Common Core standards.

Use this freebie in two ways!

(1)  Students sort the words according to the long and short vowel sounds.

(2) After they have practiced reading the words, give them a timer and let them time themselves reading the words. Have them record their time and try to beat it on the next go-round!

Cats, Cats, Cats! - Freebie

I've been catching up on email, posting, and blogging this weekend. I was sur---prised when I opened my inbox and found an invite from Teaching Blog Addict to be an author for their site! Surprised doesn't really cover it.....thrilled....ecstatic..nervous....mostly nervous!
If you haven't been to their site yet (but I bet you have!), then go now and I guarantee you will find something you like!

To celebrate, here is some help getting your second graders to meet the Common Core Standard of mentally adding and subtracting ten or one hundred from numbers up to 900.
