Both second and third grade Common Core standards include strands for Speaking and Listening. I'm going to use these cute pirate graphics to reinforce these skills at the beginning of the next school year and again throughout the year.
Students choose a topic, go over the rules for speaking and listening, and start their discussions.
Each student has three ship cards to start with, but will lose one each time he doesn't follow a rule.

And please leave a comment. I want to hear how you teach conversation skills, too.
This is fantastic! I don't think I do enough with conversation...asking them about their weekends can often be a torture! "What did you do this weekend?" "I went to a movie." "What did you see?" "The Avengers." "Did you like it?" Can you feel my pain yet?
ReplyDeleteGreat way to start conversations at the beginning of the year, thanks! =)

Is anyone else having trouble accessing the link? When I click on the pirate ship I keep getting an advertisement for Google Direct.
ReplyDeleteAny suggestions?
Thanks!!
I love to teach with comics, and then turn it into a story. The kids love it :)
