A Fine, Fine Fun Freebie!

Our system adopted Journeys as our new basal reading program.
Although I don't think we can rely solely on a basal and effectively meet the Common Core Standards, I do think Journeys has some valuable selections that are included.
I have always used A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech at the beginning of school. It just happens to also be the first selection in the third grade Journeys book. I've put together a packet of activities that include syllable work, a short and long vowel sort, writing an opinion piece, using illustrations to find information, parts of speech, and asking and answering questions. I'm giving you the questions activity as today's freebie.

Just click on one of the pics above to get the file.

I hope you have a fine, fine week. We have staff development all week, then it all cranks up next week!

Latin Suffixes Freebie!

One of the hottest topics during our Common Core training has been on Latin suffixes. Third grade students should be able to decode words with common Latin suffixes (RF.3.3b).

This fun activity requires students to match up words that end in the suffixes -er and -or with a meaning, rewrite the meaning in their own words, and then choose five of the words to use in sentences of at least seven words.

Multisyllable Words Flash Freebie!

I have been neglecting my blog these past few weeks as I have been traveling my region of the state training other third grade teachers in implementing the ELA Common Core Standards in our classrooms. I may be the trainer, but I have learned just as much from all of my fellow teachers in our sessions.
One of the biggest shifts for third grade teachers is the renewed emphasis on the Reading Foundational skills that the state of Tennessee is promoting. Our kiddos are still "learning to read," getting ready for the transition in fourth grade to "reading to learn."

I made a new packet on multisyllable words to help my kiddos and I am offering it to you tonight as a flash freebie. It will be in my Teachers Pay Teachers store from now until I go to bed. I'll take it down just as soon as I get packed for tomorrow's training.
If you want it, click on the pic below to grab it before it goes away!
Check back tomorrow, because I'm putting my whole store on sale to make up for not being around during training!
