Spots and Dots

Thank you to everyone who has left me one of those wooooonderful comments about the activities on my blog. I love reading them and knowing someone out there in blog land likes what I've been posting. I intend on continuing to share the love and keep all the "freebies" free. Teachers are probably the most "share-ful" people there are, so I want to pay it forward however I can.

I do have a favor to ask. Two of my friends (my assistant principal and his wife) are the proud parents of two beautiful, "all-boy" boys (wink, wink). The youngest son has been chosen to participate in the national calendar for "Spots and Dots," the supporting organization for families of children with a nevus. He has just completed his eighth surgery for nevus removal and/or skin expansions. He is a trooper and doesn't let those surgeries get his little two-and-a-half-year-old self down! They are selling calendars for ten dollars to help promote awareness of children with a nevus.

If you would be interested in getting a calendar, please leave me a comment below. They are taking pre-orders now through November 18. If you would like more information on a nevus, you can go to www.nevusoutreach.org.

Author's Purpose -- Why reinvent the wheel? (And a Freebie!)

We begin studying author's purpose this week. I have found so many great ideas on Pinterest and blogs and decided to use them instead of reinventing the wheel and coming up with my own.
I'll use post these signs on my wall to help remind the kiddos of the three types of author's purpose.
They're from Mrs. Gilchrist's Class.

Then, we will make our own pies from those really cheap paper plates like the ones below from Dandelions and Dragonflies.

After we have practiced by sorting different books, magazines, and other text, I'll give each child a book order form. They will cut out examples of each type of author's purpose and glue onto the correct slice of pie. Click on the picture below to download the worksheet.

Antonym and Synonym Matchup

Our story next week is Tops and Bottoms, by Janet Stevens.

To review antonyms and synonyms, I am going to give each child a card that has a word on it. They have to find the students that have the synonyms and antonyms that go with their word. Once the teams have found each other, they have to write an explanation that describes their relationships........what makes them antonyms and synonyms of each other.

This makes them think a little bit more than if they were only matching up with either a synonym OR an antonym. Click on the link below to download the activity.

Please leave a comment! Have a great rest of the weekend.

Thankful for Dictionary Skills!

I mentioned in an earlier post that our local Rotary Club gave all of our Third Graders a dictionary. The kiddos were sooooo excited! It was like Christmas in October. They beg and beg to look up words, so I promised them I would add a dictionary station to our rotation. Here is the first one. Give them a timer and turn them loose! Click on the pic below to download the Google doc. Please leave me a comment and let me know what you do to help your kids with dictionary skills.
